Why did medieval people fear the dead—and what happened when even holy water could not protect the living? A thousand years ago, Bishop Thietmar of Merseburg recorded stories of ghosts, haunted churches, and encounters with the undead. In this Kings and Generals documentary, we explore the medieval ghost stories preserved in his chronicle. At Walsleben, a priest discovers the dead gathering for worship. At Deventer, another priest enters a church where the spirits refuse to leave. Behind these unsettling accounts lies a world shaped by warfare, religious conflict, and anxiety about what awaited beyond the grave. Discover how Christian prayers for the dead, pagan traditions, the Slavic Revolt of 983, and Viking attacks helped shape these supernatural tales. Why did proper burial matter so much? What happened when graves were desecrated and churches destroyed? And did Thietmar believe these apparitions were returning souls, divine miracles, or deceptions of the devil? From the frontiers of the Ottonian Empire to the haunted sanctuaries of medieval Europe, these stories reveal how closely the living believed their fate was bound to the dead. Subscribe to K
