Macron warns Trump that calling Canada the ‘51st state’ risks eroding global order

French President Emmanuel Macron has publicly raised concerns about rhetoric from U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting Canada could become a “51st state,” calling it a sign Washington is turning away from allies. Speaking to ambassadors in Paris, Macron warned the world is entering a period where international law is being replaced by the “law of the strongest.” His remarks come amid renewed U.S. threats toward Greenland and days after a U.S. military operation in Venezuela. Former UN ambassador Bob Rae says the comments align with a U.S. security strategy that prioritizes force to achieve its objectives.
