Step into the lost world of the Khmer Empire, the medieval superpower that ruled mainland Southeast Asia from Angkor’s jungle capital. In this in-depth history documentary, we follow the rise of early kingdoms like Funan and Zhenla, the creation of Angkor, and the god-kings who built Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. Meet warrior kings such as Jayavarman II, Suryavarman II, and Jayavarman VII, whose colossal temples, canals, and reservoirs turned Cambodia into a true hydraulic civilization. We explore Khmer religion and culture – from Hindu god-kings and Mahayana Buddhism to the spread of Theravada and local animist spirits – and uncover how trade with India, China, and maritime empires reshaped the region. Finally, we trace the mysterious fall of Angkor, climate stress, wars with Champa and Ayutthaya, and the abandonment of the great city. If you’re interested in Angkor Wat explained, Cambodia history, lost empires, ancient engineering and epic temple cities, this video is for you.
