How a Mom’s Garage Shipped 80,000 Silly Strings

From the creator

This video was made possible thanks to everyone on the Simple History Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/simplehistory Marcella Shriver’s phone call in October 2006 helped turn a party toy into real battlefield support. After her son Todd Shriver told her Marines in Iraq were using Silly String to detect trip wires, she and church partners began collecting donations—soon more than 1,000 cans sat in her garage. But Silly String is considered hazardous material, and U.S. Postal Service rules prohibited shipping it overseas, so she couldn’t just mail it like normal care packages. With a hazardous-material shipping company that handled the inspections and approvals, the cans could be shipped abroad, and over 80,000 cans were sent overseas by 2007.
