For many people, waves are a mysterious creation of mother nature. If you've enjoyed a day at the beach, then you've surely witnessed waves lapping up against the shore. But do you know how those waves were formed? In today's Never Stop Learning video, you will learn five fascinating facts about waves. 1) Wind causes waves when moving across the surface of the ocean. The friction between the air and water molecules transfers energy from the wind to the water. 2) Wave height is determined by the wind speed and the “fetch”, the size of the area the wind is blown across. 3)Water doesn’t travel with the wave, it only moves up and down. Energy, using water as a medium, travels with the wave. 4) As a wave approaches shallow water, its bottom drags across the ocean floor & slows, causing the top of the wave to “break” over it. 5) Captain James Cook gave the first European account of surfing in 1778 when he saw it practiced in Hawaii, writing “I could not help concluding this man had the most supreme pleasure while he was driven so fast and so smoothly by the sea.” Love Animals and Nature?
