Cornell Lab Bird Cams
The orcas of Blackfish Sound near Vancouver Island, British Columbia have returned for the summer. To celebrate their return, we put together five fascinating facts about orcas! Watch the live OrcaLab cams here: https://explore.org/livecams/oceans/orcalab-base 1) More than 150 orcas spend the summer months in the Blackfish Sound region of northern Vancouver Island. 2) Orcas are the largest member of the dolphin family. They are typically 23-32 feet in length and can weigh up to six tons. 3) Unlike humans, orcas are "conscious breathers," meaning that they must regulate their own breathing. 4) Beach "rubbing," when orcas rub their bodies on the smooth pebbles of the beach, is a cultural trait unique to this population of orcas. 5) The orcas of Blackfish Sound are “resident” orcas and prefer to eat salmon, as opposed to “transient” orcas which prefer to eat marine mammals.
