From the creator

FP: Hi John! Let’s continue our lesson on comparisons. JR: Comparisons are a useful tool for learning new information. They help us make connections and increase our enjoyment of learning. FP: In a recent lesson, we compared grammar to trees. JR: But we can also compare trees to individual words. Language is a result of growth and change over time. When we learn new words, we can look up the ancient beginnings, or roots of the words. FP: We can also study how words are connected to each other – just like the branches of a tree are connected to the trunk of a tree. JR: Many word history websites are available. These dictionaries explain the ancient roots of words. They sometimes also give examples of how words were used in different ways in the past. FP: Let’s take an example: Study Latin “studium” ---» Medieval Latin “studiare” ----» Old French “estudiier” ------» studien ----» study JR: And then we have the branches of the tree: Study (v.) ---» study (n.) ----» studied (adj.) FP: The goal of today’s lesson was to make you consider language from a large point of view. JR: By learning about connections between words – and the history of words themselves – you can make language studies much more interesting, enjoyable, and memorable. FP: And that’s Everyday Grammar TV --------- Learning English is Voice of America’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide. We help you build vocabulary, strengthen your speaking skill
