Daniel McFarland: Keys to collaboration

Daniel McFarland, professor of education, has studied the factors that drive collaboration at Stanford. Among his discoveries are that space matters, people tend to congregate around coffee, and funding sources that reward collaboration all work to bring diverse faculty together around complex problems. In particular, he has found that the number of interconnected faculty associated with Stanford Bio-X increased dramatically over time, likely due to a well designed building and programming that inspires mixing.
