Attracting Backyard Birds: Blue Jays

Cornell Lab Bird Cams ↗

From the creator

Blue Jays are common visitors at bird feeders across their range in the eastern United States and southern Canada. They'll eat most offerings, but let's focus on a few types of food and feeders that are best to attract these vocal jays to your setup. Food Types: Whole and shelled peanuts are a favorite of Blue Jays. Offer them raw or roasted, but avoid salted or flavored varieties. Black-oil sunflower seeds are energy dense and have a thin shell. They are preferred by a wide variety of species, including Blue Jays. Suet is a great option for attracting birds that also eat insects. Some varieties may include mixed-in seeds, berries, or insects. Bird Feeders: Hoppers have a platform, walls, and a roof that protects seed against the weather. Use a large hopper feeder to attract bigger birds like jays. Blue Jays, and most feeder birds, readily visit platform feeders. A roof and drainage holes keep seeds dry during inclement weather. Tube feeders with larger ports and bigger perches will attract Blue Jays. Look for feeders with multiple perches to accommodate more birds. Landscaping Tips: Blue Jays love acorns and other tree nuts. Plant trees like oak, beech, or hazelnut to create future habitat for this species.
