The focus is on the role of boundary conditions at the intersection of two continuous media with different physical characteristics. *NOTE: These videos were originally produced as part of a physics course that is no longer available on OCW.* Chapters 0:00:00 Title slate 0:00:33 First problem: 2 equal length strings with 2 different masses. What are the two lowest modes of vibration. 0:15:36 Calculation of the normal modes of vibration of the air in a room. It is a standing wave problem in 3D. 0:18:14 A problem similar to the above, but this time the strings are replaced by rods which vibrate longitudinally and different boundary conditions are chosen. 0:19:04 The taut string fixed at both ends from the previous session is now replaced by two connected strings, each with a very different density. The lowest two normal modes are found by inspection. License: Creative Commons BY-NC-SA More information at http://ocw.mit.edu/terms More courses at http://ocw.mit.edu
